How We Started

New Testament Baptist Church started out of the combination of Metamora Baptist Church (Metamora, IN) and First Baptist Church (Harrison, OH) in May 1953. Our first meeting was held in the home of one of our members, then later moved to the community build in Milan, IN.

As the church began to grow, we eventually had to move to our current location here in Penntown, IN. We have been at 13382 IN-101 Sunman, IN since Thanksgiving, 1956.

What We Believe

God

We believe in the God of the Holy Bible. God is alone is the Maker and perfect Maintainer of all things. He reigns with care and absolute authority over His created possessions. God's power and knowledge are limitless. There is none that compare to God. God is One, but in three persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)

 Scripture

We believe God is the author of the Bible which consists of 66 books, spanning the Old and New Testament. The words were breathed-out by God and penned by holy men as the Spirit of God moved them. God has continued to preserve His Word. The Bible is God's true, accurate, complete, flawless, authoritative and trustworthy revelation of Himself to man. We view the Bible as the supreme standard by which all faith, conduct, creeds and religious opinions are measured.

Man

We believe that God created mankind in His image on the literal 6th day of creation. Each person is valued by God above all other created thing. God created man (male) and woman (female) for the purpose of procreation within the marriage relationship. God charged mankind to rule the earth and have dominion over all created things. As originally created, mankind was completely obedient to God and had unhindered fellowship with God. Everything changed when man disobeyed God and brought sin into the human race.

Sin

We believe that sin entered into the human race when Adam and Eve disobeyed God's commandment in the garden. As a result, mankind's unhindered fellowship with God was completely broken by the physical and spiritual separation of death. All of Adam's descendants inherited a sin nature from conception. The effects of sin have separated us from God, that without God's intervention, mankind is left helpless and hopeless.

Christ

We believe that Jesus is the second person of the Trinity of God. He is Christ, the eternal Son of God. Jesus Christ took on the nature of man when He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of a virgin woman (Mary) according to God's eternal purpose revealed in scriptures. While on earth, Jesus experienced every human demand, necessity, trial, and temptation, yet He did not sin. His perfect obedience gave honor to God's law, so that in His death on the cross, He became a substitute, giving Himself as payment for the debt owed by mankind for their sin. After three days, Jesus was raised from the dead. Being fully God and fully man, Jesus then ascended into Heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where is the One Mediator between God and man. One day He will return in power and glory to judge the world to complete His redemptive mission.

Salvation

We believe that salvation is the redemption, regeneration, and reconciliation of the whole man. It is a free gift to all who will accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. When a sinner responds, with repentance (turning from sin to God) and faith (acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior) to God's call and conviction of sin, they become new creatures in Christ. God fully forgives and pardons them of all their sins. They begin their new life of peace and favor with God. God enables all believers to grow and progress toward moral and spiritual maturity by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The growth will continue until death or Jesus' return.

Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is the fully divine Spirit of God, the third person of the Trinity. He inspires the Scriptures.  He enables men to understand the truth. He convicts men of sin, righteousness and judgment. He exalts Christ. The Holy Spirit calls men to the Savior, effects salvation and places every believer into the Body of Christ. He motivates Christian character, comforts believers, and gives them gifts by which they serve God through His church by worship, evangelism, and service. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence dwelling in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fulness of the stature of Christ.

The Church

We believe the church of the Lord Jesus Christ is made up of all believers, with Christ at the Head. We believe a local church is a visible representation of Christ's church. A local church is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers associated by a covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel. Each congregation is governed by our Lord Jesus Christ. Leadership within the local church is described in terms of function: Shepherding, Pastoring, Overseeing, and Ministering. Men who serve in these roles are to be spiritually mature elders as qualified in the Scriptures. The purpose of the church is to worship God and serve our Lord by spreading the gospel, discipleship and edification. We believe that there are two ordinances: Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

Last Things

We believe that God, in His own time an din His own way, will bring the world to its appropriate end. According to His promise, Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly, in glory to the earth; the dead in Christ will be raised; God will judge all men in righteousness. The unrighteous will be condemned to Hell, the place of everlasting punishment. The righteous, in their resurrected and glorified body, will receive their reward and will dwell forever in Heaven with the Lord.
